IDEA has always required schools to provide assistive technology to students with disabilities if the IEP team determines the child needs it to realize educational benefit, and access FAPE. However, the proliferation of devices, software and apps means every educator needs to keep up with technology AND emerging legal issues. Assistive technology is making UDL and Personalized Learning possible for all students! There are so many free and low cost options available for all learners, that AT and ED Tech are crossing paths often! Discuss AT implementation and best practice, including SETT (Student, Environment, Task,Tool) and the QIAT Indicators for Assistive Technology. We will develop plans for creating AT teams in your school, and discuss the who, what and how of AT training, implementation, best practice, train the trainer, in-house resources, and when it is necessary to call an ATP (Assistive Technology Professional) for an AT Evaluation. When does AT make Personalized learning and UDL Possible, and When is AT necessary to access curriculum and instruction, so as needing to be reflected in the IEP. Further, Where do you include AT in the IEP? What do AT goals look like? Where are they written in the IEP? Identify factors to consider in determining whether AT is necessary for FAPE.
